Dr Kyaw Win's medical speciality is the study and treatment of malaria. He was born in 1938; by the age of 23 he was an instructor in pathology in Rangoon; he then spent three years training in the UK, in London and Edinburgh, before returning to an Army consultant's job in Rangoon in 1964, at the age of 26.
He retained this title until 1995 - though diversifying considerably in terms of experience. In 1975-6 he was a visiting lecturer cum research fellow at Harvard. In 1988, the year of the SLORC takeover, he was made Director of Medical Services in the Burmese Ministry of Defence - and from 1989 onwards he was a member of several WHO expert committees concerned with malaria treatment and control, and attended numerous international meetings in that capacity.
He has contributed to a number of world medical textbooks.
Within Burma at large he is perhaps best known as a personal physician of President (and then Chairman) Ne Win. While he was top consultant at the Rangoon Military Hospital, he attended on several other Burmese leaders too. During his career he has won a large number of awards, including four fellowships in Britain, the US and Australia, and a number of medals in Burma.
He is married, and has three children. As a student he played badminton for his country, rowed for his college and played the piano; but now his sport is golf and he listens to music rather than playing it.
