(2nd October 1997)
We never have a speaker on the date of the October Reception. However, this year was our 40th anniversary, so celebrations were in order - and some excellent performers very kindly contributed their services.
First there was a traditional dance in the reception room of the Medical Society building. Hnin Kay Thwe (right) gave an elegant rendition of Myu Hmaung Wai Kin ("All the foggy things will be cleared").
Then we moved into the main lecture hall. Compered by our President, Sir Nicholas Fenn, senior members of the Society told colourful stories of the early days - most of them probably quite true. One or two members could remember 15th October 1957, the day when the Society was founded.
Then everyone joined in a rousing finale: the Society's
own Song of Welcome, composed by a former Secretary, U Nay Win, back in
1961. The song was accompanied by the eminent Myanmar harpist U Ne Wa,
with U Nay Win on the violin. Leading voices (on the right of the photo)
included Daw Khin Phyu Kyi, Ma Su Su Htun, Ma Tin Mar Mar and Daw Nita
Yin Yin May.
